The economic conundrum of EV battery recycling is a pressing issue that threatens to leave salvage yards with unwanted batteries and society with hazardous waste. While the recycling of EV batteries is crucial for reducing climate impact and easing reliance on China for critical minerals, the economics of the process often don't pencil out. This is particularly challenging for small salvage yards, which lack the economies of scale to optimize shipping logistics and negotiate better deals with recyclers. The situation is further complicated by the changing composition of EV batteries, with manufacturers shifting away from expensive minerals like nickel and cobalt towards cheaper alternatives like iron phosphate, which are less valuable to recycle. This has led to a situation where some recyclers are reluctant to accept old batteries, and others are charging high gate fees to do so. The result is a risk of batteries ending up in landfills or being shipped overseas to unsafe recycling facilities. Colorado has taken a proactive approach to this problem by passing a new law that puts the onus of recycling unwanted EV batteries on the companies that sold them in the first place. This 'producer responsibility' law serves as a backstop, ensuring that manufacturers are responsible for recycling batteries that are dumped at landfills or stranded at salvage yards. The law also requires that a certain percentage of the battery's minerals be recovered, ensuring proper recycling.
